The Dean of Taiwan Art: Lin Yushan Solo Exhibition

Venue: Chan Liu Art Museum˙Taipei  B1., No.63, Sec. 2, Ren-ai Rd., Taipei, Taiwan
Chan Liu Art Museum˙Taipei launches The Dean of Taiwan Art: Lin Yushan Solo Exhibition, displaying late virtuoso Lin Yushan's 80 impressive art works. Lin Yushan (1907-2004), born name Yinggui, aliases Yunqiauzi, Chu-lô-san-ren, and Tao-cheng-san-ren, was a renowned Taiwanese senior painter born in Chiayi. In 1927, his Buffalo, a rarely-seen gouache painting in Taiwan back then, was selected in the first Taiwan Fine Arts Exhibition. Lin, thus, established the reputation of a professional artist at the young age of 20, prospering in youth. Lin's Buffalo was selected together with the art works of Chen Chin and Kuo Hsuehhu, and the three young painters were entitled the "Three Youngsters in Taiwan Fine Arts Exhibition". Afterward, Lin kept painting and experimented on diverse styles to broaden his art horizons. Due to Taiwan's unique historical context, he absorbed Japanese and Chinese elements to brew a new painting style of his own: it is close to that of bright-colored Japanese painting and is also of Chinese traditional spirit of brush and ink. Furthermore, he advocated sketch, educated and promoted younger generation,
making a great contribution to the development of Taiwan art.
In this solo exhibition, Chan Liu Art Museum displays Lin's art works ranging from his prime to late years, which span over half of the century, to show Lin's gouache literati style in early years and color ink paintings that follow. Chan Liu Art Museum has collection of Lin's mostly after 1970s. After the 70's, having gone beyond to a poised stage of maturity, Lin started off his unbridles free style by manipulating brush with water and ink dashingly. With flowers, birds, animals as recurring leitmotifs, Lin depicted plants and creatures with Japanese meticulous brush technique and gave amiable temperament to the paintings, on the other hand, his virile stokes made tiger's spirit very vivid. Since Lin went on oversea trips after the 70's and created a method of sketching western scenery with water ink, he began to make personal interpretation, turning his painting into modern neo-landscape
painting, with which he enriched his iconological language.
To give a comprehensive exhibition in Taiwan art of that time, the curator Chan Yu-ching exhibits the art works of Chen Chin and Kuo Hsuehhu, who were other two artists in "Three Youngsters", along with other contemporaries' gouache masterpieces as well. This exhibition will enable people to have a historical retrospect to the achievement of those wrote a new page in Taiwan art history in the 20's. Moreover, Free East Inc. will release a series of elegant apparels which integrates Lin Yushan's art works to glorify the combination of the beauty of eastern art and modern cultural
creative product.
Mr. Lin Yushan, a professor of countless students, made endeavors to art and passing down his knowledge. Lin, therefore, is the impetus to Taiwan art history. To emulate the legacy, Chan Liu Art Museum sincerely invites you to join the world of virtuoso works of Mr. Lin Yushan together with Chen Chin, Kuo Hsuehhu and other
important Taiwanese senior painters.
